A photograph does not have to be in focus to be awesome.

As a society, we are so inundated by photographic imagery that we are numb to what is essentially magic. Photography is a magical medium, regardless of whether it is film or digital. So there’s this box, see, and it’s a box that can capture an image and preserve it forever with the push of a button. Yes. That is amazing. Of course film holds a special place in the hearts and minds of many, as it requires a great deal more patience than digital. Oh, the anticipation of film.

This exhibition embodies the creative diversity of 125 artists. On September 27, invited artists met downtown, were given a disposable camera, had 125 minutes to make photographs of anything s/he wanted. Film was developed and scanned. Images were selected. You can see another round of images by these same artists here.

As I culled through more than 3000 images to select the 125 photographs displayed, I considered the point of view of the maker, the story in the image, the traditional elements of photography (composition, light, contrast, line, repetition, color, mass, texture), and audience experience. Ultimately, I considered how each photo fit with the other 124 photographs exhibited.

Oklahoma City is the subject of this exhibition, as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of incorporation. Place is significant to our understanding of ourselves. We create memories in places. We seek places for comfort. We seek places for excitement. We admire some places. We ignore others. Place is very tied to emotional experience and nostalgia. Thematically, place has been in constant subject in the art I make. It is no wonder it holds significance in the exhibitions I curate.
